First Friday

Having come thus far
Along this cobbled road
Following specious instructions
From ill favoured finger posts
Being tempted by taverns
I paused for pleasure

Time was on my side you see.

Long forgotten battles
Whose frayed and faded
Banners,crumbling drooped
Across the transept
Of this country church

Paused me.

The tattered remnants
Of the glories and defeats
Above the lord and lady's
Alabaster tomb
On her hands the beads
In his the hilt broken,
Brought to mind a last crusade.

Time was not on their side you see.

By the laurel and the yew
The ashes of some old fire

 A pause for thought

A burnt offering, a sacrifice?
Ask not.
