Paddy's Choice
Yesterday
My dad's feast day
Most appropriate
For a kindly Irishman.
Now he could watch
For a kindly day
For potato planting
Kerr's Pink
Paddy's choice.
He was one for spading the ground
In preparation for clinching a deal
In the long run.
With an eye to the weather
He was a wary walker
Tis the bright day
That brings forth the adder.
He knew better than most
Born on St Swithens day.
" Better ask your father! "
Was my mother's cry.
He merely gave knowing smile.
" A nod's as good as wink to a blind horse."
He rarely gave anything away
Being brought low
By a single stroke.
His final request.
A bacon and egg sandwich
Before he slipped
Into the silence and the dark.
"Goodnight ladies",
Would have been
A more fitting
Farewell.
