Friday 13 th

Now what could happen on Friday the 13, said to be an inauspicious day. On Friday 13 October 1307 Jacques de Molay  and 60 Templars were arrested in dawn raids in Paris. They were accused of heresy and various heinous crimes, homosexuality, being one such at the time. Pope Clement V had moved himself and the curia to Avignon and so was in just a little way under the thumb of Philip IV of France.

The more plausible reason was that Philip was broke and asked them for funds, which they refused. Being warned of such an attack, flagged many days before, they are said to have shipped their gold out of La Rochelle in the direction of Scotland. This gave rise to all kinds of wondrous tales: unsubstantiated, and quests: unsuccessful.

Jacques de Molay recanted on the admission of his heresy, extracted under torture and was burnt at the stake with Geoffroi de Mornay, his close ally, on 18th March 1314. Before succumbing to the flames he cursed Philip and the pope, Clement V and prophesied their early death.

Clement was dead within 40 days and Philip before the end of the year.
